A visionary bridge between research and care: The new Center for Brain Health

The Center for Brain Health, the only one of its kind in Germany, brings the latest research findings into clinical care. The focus is on optimizing brain function across a broad spectrum of neurological and psychiatric disorders—with a particular emphasis on neurodegenerative diseases and severe psychiatric conditions.

Kickoff for Innovation and Patient-Centered Care

The center’s work was officially launched with a ceremonial kickoff event. Science Minister Prof. Dr. Armin Willingmann, Prof. Dr. Helmut Weiß, Vice Rector of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, and the hospital’s executive board emphasized the site’s importance as a driver of innovation that closely links excellent research with state-of-the-art patient care.

Prevention Rather Than Just Reaction

Brain health is far more than the mere absence of disease,” emphasized Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Heinze, Medical Director of the University Hospital. “From the very beginning, our vision was a center that consistently brings together prevention, diagnostics, therapy, and follow-up care. We want to strengthen and preserve the core functions of the brain throughout the entire lifespan.”

Willingmann added: “The new Center for Brain Health demonstrates what modern university medicine can achieve. Medical excellence and societal benefit go hand in hand here. With its establishment, the University Hospital is setting a new standard for care: moving toward an integrated approach combining prevention, diagnostics, therapy, and follow-up care with the patient at the center. Saxony-Anhalt and Magdeburg offer ideal conditions for this: decades of excellent expertise in neuroscience meet an aging society. Thus, the new center is not only a medical institution but also an important strategic component for healthcare and future sustainability in the state.”

Megatrends: Early Detection and “Super Agers”

Prof. Dr. Emrah Düzel, Director of the Institute for Cognitive Neurology and Dementia Research Magdeburg (IKND) and spokesperson for the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Magdeburg, focused on key health-related factors for patient care. The goal is to provide optimal care for patients in combined brain health and memory clinics.

Düzel highlighted current key “megatrends” at the intersection of Alzheimer’s disease and brain health: New antibody therapies slow the progression of the disease when administered as early as possible, while digital self-tests and blood analyses enable increasingly earlier diagnosis. At the same time, the focus is shifting from dementia prevention toward actively maintaining cognitive function. The goal is to stabilize cognition, slow down disease processes, and specifically strengthen existing brain resources. In this context, strengthening cognitive dispositions that promote brain health plays an important role. This includes, for example, optimism and avoiding repetitive negative thoughts.

In parallel, a specific group is coming into the focus of research: the so-called “Super Agers”—people who remain exceptionally capable even in old age, show few pathological brain changes in examinations, and provide valuable insights into the brain’s protective mechanisms.

Basic Research and Neurotechnology

In addition to these developments, the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology (LIN) complements the Center’s perspective with a more basic-research-oriented approach: The focus is on the mechanisms of learning, attention, and executive control and the question of how changes in brain circuits translate into cognitive and mental health. This gives rise to new approaches for diagnostics and therapy, for example in neurological and psychiatric disorders. In addition, neurotechnological methods such as personalized brain stimulation and neuroprosthetics, as well as approaches from microelectronics and artificial intelligence, are being developed. This creates a direct bridge from basic research to concrete applications in prevention and treatment.

“If we understand how learning and adaptation are organized in the brain’s circuits, we can intervene in these processes more precisely and develop new therapeutic approaches,” says Prof. Dr. Stefan Remy, Scientific Director of the LIN. “The Center for Brain Health offers the opportunity to closely integrate basic research and clinical application.”

Neuropsychiatric Health as a Cornerstone

Neurodegenerative diseases are treated jointly by neurology and psychiatry. Integrative concepts were presented by Prof. Nickl-Jockschat, Director of the University Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy and spokesperson for the German Center for Mental Health (DZPG) at the Magdeburg branch. In addition to neurodegenerative diseases, depression and schizophrenia are also treated here, conditions that can cause impairments for those affected that are just as severe as those caused by dementia. For the treatment of these severe conditions, the translation of the latest research findings into clinical practice therefore plays a central role. Innovative approaches for early detection, as well as for the specific treatment of certain brain networks—such as through neurostimulation—are designed to work together optimally to ensure the best possible therapeutic outcomes at every stage of a disease. In this way, the center pools its expertise to provide holistic care. The focus here is on the synergistic integration of early diagnosis, individualized therapy—including for difficult-to-treat cases—and sustainable prevention strategies.

A Unique Ecosystem for Holistic Approaches

The fact that body and mind cannot be viewed separately is reflected in the “Magdeburg Ecosystem.” Dean Prof. Dr. Daniela Dieterich presented a closely networked collaboration between medicine, natural sciences, engineering, and partners such as the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology (LIN).

“With the Center for Brain Health, we are pooling the unique expertise available in Magdeburg. Our goal is to build a bridge from basic research directly to medical application—and we are building this bridge together from the very beginning: physicians, scientists, and engineers conduct research here side by side, within shared structures and collaborative projects. Those who study and conduct research here are not confined to a single discipline but are trained for three fields. Modern care relies on interdisciplinary approaches that consider both dimensions—the physical and the psychological—together. We are already shaping the next generation who will make this a reality,” said Prof. Dieterich.

Shared Vision

Prof. Heinze emphasized: “With the center, we are putting our original idea into practice: to integrate research, care, and prevention so closely that a new standard for brain health emerges—with people at the center.”

“Brain health is one of the major challenges of our aging society, which Magdeburg University Hospital is specifically addressing with the new center. The center brings together the site’s vast neuroscientific expertise and combines it with state-of-the-art technologies and international networking. This creates new opportunities to translate findings from cutting-edge research into innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches and to sustainably improve care and quality of life,” added Prof. Weiß.
