Admission is free. All interested parties, relatives and patients are cordially invited. The presentations offer a comprehensive insight into the key areas of diagnosis and treatment of cataracts and glaucoma. The experts will focus in particular on those aspects in which significant progress has recently been made.
Glaucoma, commonly referred to as glaucoma, is an eye disease that often causes damage to the optic nerve. This disease is triggered by increased intraocular pressure, which is generated by the aqueous humour. If the intraocular pressure is too high, it presses on the optic nerve and the retinal cells and damages them. Without treatment, this can gradually worsen vision and even lead to blindness. The eye disease is usually only diagnosed once the optic nerve has already been damaged.
Cataracts, also known as cataracts, are an eye disease caused by the natural ageing process of the lens, which begins from the age of 50. Smoking and illnesses such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease can significantly accelerate the onset of cataracts. Reduced visual acuity, increased sensitivity to light and short-sightedness as well as loss of colour intensity or double vision are among the symptoms caused by cataracts.
The treatment of the two eye diseases differs from one another. Glaucoma is initially treated with medication, while cataracts can be completely restored with the help of an eye operation in which the lens is replaced with an artificial lens.
Medical Sunday is an initiative for all interested parties and was made possible by a co-operation between the Urania Magdeburg e.V., the Volksstimme and Magdeburg University Medicine. In addition to insights into medical topics, the event also offers the opportunity to speak directly with the experts and clarify individual questions.
