Magdeburg University Medical Center Opens Pediatric Oncology and General Pediatrics Day Clinic
Magdeburg University Medical Center has opened a new day clinic for pediatric oncology and general pediatric care during a ceremonial inauguration. The new facility significantly expands outpatient and day-clinic treatment options for children and adolescents. The goal is to reduce hospital stays and, above all, to allow children with cancer or other chronic illnesses—as well as their families—to spend more time at home during treatment.
The day clinic will be used immediately in the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology department, particularly for minor chemotherapy treatments, blood transfusions, and short procedures under anesthesia. Pediatric oncology care is provided by a multidisciplinary team in compliance with the quality standards of the Joint Federal Committee and within the framework of OnkoZert certification. In the field of general pediatrics, imaging diagnostic procedures such as MRI scans under anesthesia, as well as minor diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, can now be offered on an outpatient basis. The inpatient care units remain organizationally separate.
The new structure complements the work of the Magdeburg University Children’s Hospital, which, under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Antje Redlich, brings together a number of specialized departments. The range of treatments covers acute and chronic conditions across the entire field of pediatrics, including, for example, heart and lung diseases, coagulation disorders, kidney diseases, neurological and endocrinological disorders, as well as conditions affecting premature and newborn infants. Seriously ill children are cared for in the pediatric intensive care unit under the direction of Chief Physician Dr. med. Gert Warncke.
