More than 8,000 different rare diseases affect around four million people in Germany. An estimated 100,000 people in Saxony-Anhalt live with a rare disease or suspected rare disease. For many patients, this means years of odyssey through the healthcare system in search of a confirmed diagnosis, suitable therapies, and specialized experts.
In order to close this gap in care in central Germany in line with the recommendations for the care of people with rare diseases, the Central German Competence Network for Rare Diseases (MKSE) was founded in 2014. The MKSE links the university hospitals in Magdeburg and Halle (Saale) as well as the Municipal Hospital in Dessau. With funding from the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the close cooperation between these three players will contribute significantly to further improving diagnostics, care, and research in the field of rare diseases. At the same time, cooperation with registered doctors and regional institutions will be strengthened in the long term.
