University Hospital integrates medical facilities of the Pfeiffer Foundations - concept convinces creditors' committee

15.05.2025 -

With the notarisation of the investor agreement, Magdeburg University Hospital has been confirmed as the new medical partner of the Pfeiffer Foundations. The bidding process of the Pfeiffer Foundations in Magdeburg-Cracau has thus been successfully concluded. At the end of the bidding process, the University Hospital A.ö.R. prevailed with a convincing concept for healthcare provision in the region in terms of both content and economics. The merger with Universitätsklinikum Magdeburg A.ö.R. includes the clinic in the Pfeiffer Foundations, the Lostau Lung Clinic and the Pfeiffer Foundations' medical care centre. The creditors of the companies will now agree to this as part of an insolvency plan so that the investor process can be finalised.

Ulrike Petermann, Director of Theology, says: ‘In Magdeburg University Hospital, we are gaining a partner that will strengthen medical care and at the same time leave room for what defines us as a diaconal organisation. Our task remains to provide people with holistic support - in medical, nursing and pastoral care. We will also actively incorporate this perspective into the new care framework.’

‘The University Hospital A.ö.R. has developed a clear care model for the health region of Saxony-Anhalt that ensures the continued existence of the hospitals,’ adds Prof Dr Lars Timm, Chief Development Officer of the Pfeiffer Foundations. ‘Our goal has always been to lead the medical facilities on a stable course with a connection to the healthcare region. The approval of the creditors' committee is an expression of trust in this constellation.’

Prof. Dr Hans-Jochen Heinze, Medical Director of the University Hospital Magdeburg A.ö.R., emphasises: ‘With the integration of the clinics and the MVZ, we are pooling our medical and nursing strengths and will bear joint responsibility for the security of care in the region in future. Our overarching goal is to maintain the quality of patient care and to ensure that all Magdeburg University Hospital sites (Leipziger Straße, Landesfrauenklinik, Cracau, Lostau and the MVZs) are future-proof.’

Marco Bohn, Commercial Director of the University Hospital Magdeburg, explains: ‘The merger is a milestone - both for the new facilities of the University Hospital Magdeburg A.ö.R. and for ourselves. We are securing jobs, creating synergies and building together on what makes the facilities strong today. We warmly welcome our new colleagues and look forward to working together! We would also like to continue our excellent collaboration with the Pfeiffer Foundations.’

Prof Dr Lucas Flöther, trustee in the proceedings, draws a positive balance: ‘The new partnership offers creditors good prospects and enables a sustainable supply structure. The bidding process was transparent and open-ended - the decision in favour of the university hospital is based on economic viability and medical expertise.’

Thomas Mulansky, General Manager, emphasises the importance of the partnership for the restructuring as a whole: ‘The conclusion of the bidding process is a milestone in the foundations’ proceedings. We now want to bring the reorganisation as a whole to a successful conclusion. The professionalism with which the bidding process was conducted and finalised by all parties involved gives me confidence.’

The conclusion of the contract secures the future of the Pfeiffer Foundations' medical facilities. The Management Board, employees and new owners will now take the next steps towards realisation.

At the beginning of the year, the Pfeiffer Foundations applied for a protective shield procedure. The main reasons for this were the rising material and personnel costs without adequate counter-financing and additional structural requirements, which had put the clinics in particular in a financially precarious position.
