Digital ward rounds: University Medicine Magdeburg launches pilot project for networked patient care

11.02.2025 -

The University Medical Center Magdeburg (UMMD) is taking another step towards the digital future. At an internal event today, digital ward rounds were presented as a pilot project on the gastroenterology ward by Prof. Dr. med. Verena Keitel-Anselmino. The new technology is intended to make patient care more efficient, safer and more convenient.

Digital ward rounds enable doctors and nursing staff to access digital patient files on the move, document examinations using voice recognition and record vital signs in real time using smart ward round trolleys. Digital information and electronic treatment contracts can also be accessed directly at the patient's bedside via tablets. This optimizes processes and improves treatment quality and patient safety at the same time.

‘With the digital ward round, we are setting new standards in medical care. The close networking of all relevant information facilitates the work of the teams and directly benefits patients,’ emphasised Prof. Dr Keitel-Anselmino.

The event was attended by Science Minister Prof Dr Armin Willingmann and Finance Minister Michael Richter. Both emphasised the great importance of digitalisation in the healthcare sector. ‘Modern technologies such as digital ward rounds play a key role in making medical care fit for the future. UMMD is doing pioneering work here for Saxony-Anhalt,’ explained Minister Willingmann. Minister Richter added: ‘Investment in digital infrastructure is essential to ensure efficiency and quality in hospital operations.’

In addition to the presentation of the digital ward round, a new computer centre on the hospital site was also officially put into operation during the event. It forms the technological backbone for UMMD's digital transformation and guarantees the highest security standards for medical data.

With this digitalisation offensive, UMMD is underlining its goal of using innovative technologies for the benefit of patients and making hospital operations future-proof.
