The event starts at 10.30 a.m. in University Lecture Hall 1, Building 26 (near the University Library) in Pfälzer Straße. Admission is free. All interested parties, relatives and patients are cordially invited.
The lecture will provide a detailed insight into the key areas of the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders. The expert will also discuss those aspects in which significant progress has currently been made.
When fears dominate everyday life, this can indicate an anxiety disorder that significantly affects daily life. Phobias are among the most common forms of anxiety disorders. Social phobia, in which sufferers have fears of social situations at work or during training or studies, for example, can be a very stressful form of anxiety. Generalised anxiety disorder, in which sufferers experience constant, excessive worry, and panic disorder, which is accompanied by sudden, intense attacks of anxiety with, for example, a racing heart, sweating, fear of death and light-headedness, are further examples of this spectrum of illnesses. Anxiety disorders can lead to avoidance, withdrawal and isolation and often represent a heavy burden and restrictions in personal and professional life for those affected.
The University Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy Magdeburg offers help in its specialised outpatient clinic for anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders, for example for panic disorders, social phobias or fears of or in connection with physical illnesses. The first step in the diagnosis and counselling process is a detailed initial consultation. The focus here is on recording and assessing the symptoms of those affected in order to then discuss a personalised treatment recommendation with them.
One of the therapy methods with the best evidence, i.e. proof of effectiveness, is cognitive behavioural therapy, in which, for example, anxiety-related thought patterns can be reflected upon and changed. Exposure therapy, in which those affected confront their fears step by step, is also a proven method. Newer approaches such as virtual reality therapy make it possible to safely simulate realistic scenarios in order to overcome fears. In addition, neurofeedback and mindfulness-based therapies offer innovative ways to regain control over one's own emotions and organise everyday life free of excessive anxiety.
Medical Sunday is an initiative for all interested parties and was made possible by a co-operation between Urania Magdeburg e.V., Volksstimme and Magdeburg University Hospital. In addition to insights into medical topics, the event also offers the opportunity to speak directly with the experts and clarify individual questions.
