Prof. Thomas Hachenberg holds farewell lecture

Prof. Dr. Dr. med. Thomas Hachenberg will be retiring on October 11, 2024 with a farewell lecture. Under the title “From here to much further”, the lecture will be dedicated to the challenges in anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine. Professor Hachenberg headed the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg for more than 23 years. All interested parties are cordially invited to attend.

Professor Hachenberg, born in Paderborn in 1957, began his career in medicine after studying human medicine at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, which he completed in 1983 with his license to practice medicine. Just one year later, he completed his doctorate and continued his career in anaesthesiology, obtaining his specialist qualification in 1989. He subsequently worked at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Anesthesiology and Operative Intensive Care Medicine at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster, where he habilitated in 1990 and was awarded the Venia Legendi as a private lecturer.

His professional career took him to the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald in 1994, where he was Professor of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine and Senior Consultant. In 2001, he was appointed to the Chair of Anesthesiology at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and took up the position of Director of the University Clinic for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine.

In addition to his clinical and academic work, Professor Hachenberg was involved in numerous professional policy committees and expert commissions. Particularly noteworthy is his role during the Covid-19 pandemic, in which he organized intensive medical care in the "North Cluster" of Saxony-Anhalt and also ensured the treatment of critically ill children after the closure of the pediatric intensive care unit at the University Hospital Magdeburg.

His merits were recognized through numerous honors, including the award of the Gold Honorary Badge from the Professional Association of German Anesthetists in 2018. Even after his retirement in 2024, Prof. Hachenberg will remain with the University Medicine Magdeburg in an advisory capacity.
