LEMMING project: Interprofessional teaching in the practical phases of medical studies

Project management: PD Dr.med. habil. Philipp Stieger, MME, WG Teaching Research in Cardiology

Based on the recommendations of the German Council of Science and Humanities and the current licensing regulations for doctors, the implementation of interprofessional skills in medical training is increasingly seen as indispensable in order to optimize cross-sectoral, integrated medical care. The "LEMMING" project aims to integrate interprofessional skills into medical training longitudinally and workplace-based and thus prepare students as early as possible for the requirements of interprofessional teamwork in patient care in order to strengthen cooperation between doctors and nursing staff.

To achieve this goal, the project includes a variety of teaching formats and approaches. These include introductory events, workshops, bedside teaching and case studies on the VIPER learning platform. Students gain practical insights into nursing practice and learn effective techniques for working with nursing staff.Teaching impulses from experienced nursing staff convey specific nursing content to the medical students. The project covers all practical phases of medical studies and is supported longitudinally. In the long term, a cooperation with the Training Center for Health Professions (AZG) Magdeburg is also planned in order to include nursing trainees.

In addition, the project includes accompanying teaching research that examines, among other things, the importance of interprofessional teaching from the students' perspective and, with reference to the teaching interventions, the influence of interprofessional teaching on the students' understanding of organizational processes on the ward. To this end, students will be surveyed during the practical phases and qualitative interviews will be conducted to record teaching and learning effects as well as differences between the groups.
