Globally unique device concept for image-guided interventions at Magdeburg University Hospital
At the University Medical Centre Magdeburg, under the direction of Prof. Dr Maciej Pech, Director of the University Clinic for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, an innovative device concept was developed in collaboration with Siemens Healthineers that is unique in the world. It combines the most important procedures in interventional radiology and diagnostics - angiography, ultrasound and CT - to create a new type of platform for minimally invasive, image-guided interventions. The focus is on CT-supported procedures, which are supplemented by angiographic techniques.
By combining these technologies in a perfectly harmonised concept and integrating robotic components, interventions that were previously not possible can now be realised for the first time. This concept was funded by an EU programme for the development of innovative medical technology.
Unique two-room system
The innovative system extends over two neighbouring, directly connected rooms. Each room is equipped with a modern angiography system that also has integrated ultrasound technology. A CT device, which can be moved between the rooms on a rail system, enables all currently available imaging procedures to be used directly on the patient during an intervention.
A specially equipped monitoring area is used for the preparation and aftercare of patients. Vital parameters can be continuously monitored here. This concept makes it possible to overcome previous restrictions, as patients no longer have to be transported between different rooms during an operation. Instead, the devices are brought to the patient - a significant advance in terms of safety and efficiency.
New opportunities for research and practice
This approach opens up new research approaches for minimally invasive therapies. In particular, CT-assisted interventions in combination with other procedures take centre stage. At the same time, all known methods can continue to be realised to the highest quality.
The concept also makes it possible to separate outpatient and inpatient treatments, as the two rooms can be used independently of each other. This structure is particularly advantageous in pandemic situations, as the rooms can be operated in isolation from hospital operations if necessary.
Emergency care at the highest level
The proximity to the emergency department at Magdeburg University Hospital makes it possible to bring patients directly from the ambulance to this area in the event of mass accidents or acute emergencies. They can be treated there immediately and then transferred to other hospital departments.
Innovative strength of the University Medical Centre Magdeburg
This globally unique concept emphasises the pioneering role of Magdeburg University Medicine in the development of innovative technologies and workflows for interventional radiology. It improves patient care, optimises treatment results and sets new standards in medical imaging.
The combination of state-of-the-art technology, flexible utilisation and maximum efficiency not only offers advantages for patients, but also increases the attractiveness of Magdeburg University Medicine for medical staff.
