Residence and work permit for non-EU nationals

International Placement Services (ZAV)

Students from non-EU countries require a work permit (ZAV agreement) for practical placements in Germany.
UMMD must apply to the Federal Employment Agency, International Placement Services (ZAV) for the agreement or approval of interns.

This also applies if the students do not require a residence permit for Germany.
Whether a visa or residence permit is required is decided by the diplomatic mission abroad (German embassy) or the foreigners authority without the involvement of the Federal Employment Agency.

Interns must submit the invitation letter and letter of acceptance as well as the agreement of the ZAV to the mission abroad (German Embassy).
The internship can only be completed if the ZAV permission/agreement is listed on the visa.
The ZAV requires approximately 6-8 weeks processing time before the permit is issued.
It is therefore necessary to apply in good time.

Residence permit requirement for internships and clinical clerkships

Non-EU nationals are obliged to present a valid residence permit or visa, which must be submitted to the Personnel division at least one week before the start of the stay.
If the relevant document is not presented, the internship/ clinical traineeship cannot be carried out at the UMMD.

Please note: This does not apply to students who are resident in non-EU countries but have European citizenship.
