Invitation: Women's Oncology Information Day at the University Medical Centre Magdeburg

13.06.2025 -

The University Clinic for Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine at Magdeburg University Hospital cordially invites you to a public information event. The focus will be on the Breast Centre, the Gynaecological Centre and the Centre for Familial Breast and Ovarian Cancer (FBREK-Z UMMD).

The event offers in-depth information on all aspects of breast and ovarian cancer. It also creates space for exchange, mutual support and understanding - for those affected, relatives and all interested parties.

Cancers of female organs such as the breast and ovaries affect many people and bring with them not only medical but also emotional challenges. This makes it all the more important to be well informed and to engage in dialogue.

Prof. Dr Atanas Ignatov, Director of the University Women's Hospital and Prof. Dr Martin Zenker, Director of the Institute of Human Genetics, cordially invite you to this free information day. Registration is not required.

When: Monday, 23 June from 16:00 to 18:30

Background informations:

Breast cancer is a malignant tumour of the mammary glands or the surrounding tissue. Abnormal cells grow uncontrollably and can spread. Around 70,500 women in Germany are diagnosed with the disease every year, but men can also be affected. If breast cancer is recognised early, there is a good chance of recovery. Regular check-ups are crucial. Treatment depends on the type and stage of the tumour and usually includes surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy as well as hormone or targeted therapies.

Ovarian cancer mainly develops from cells in the outer epithelial layer of the ovaries. As early symptoms are non-specific (e.g. abdominal pain, bloating), the disease is often only recognised late. Around 7,000 to 7,500 women are diagnosed with the disease in Germany every year, mainly women over the age of 50. Treatment usually consists of surgery and chemotherapy; the chances of recovery depend heavily on the time of diagnosis.
